Glad you enjoyed it. Mongolia is an incredibly cool place to work and live. The common people are kind and generous, the countryside is raw and beautiful and the lifestyle is vibrant. It is very challenging to work within the limitations that exist because of the economic, political and geographic remoteness but overcoming those limitations is very rewarding to those who enjoy challenges. The big difference between those two machines as far as operation goes is that the D8N applies drive power(and consequently turning) with hydraulics. a single stick in the left hand controls direction and speed The earlier models like the D9R pictured is that they still use clutch/braking for turning. This means that a selector lever is still needed for forward and reverse gears and that there is a clutch/brake lever controlling each track to facilitate turning. I prefer the earlier models. MBT

Thanks, that would be great.
Is there any difference in driving the D9 to the D8?
I know the D9 is some 10 tons heavier and has more Horse-power but is any CAT model particular nicer to drive than the rest?
Just curious.
(I’ve never driven a Dozer in my life)
Thanks again

What is really funny is that the this was nowhere near the worst that my lead operator stuck the 9. He overran his base once building a dam and ran about 10 meters down the face just short of the drink. Took all the heavy equipment I had team pulling to get that dozer back up. Another time he wallowed it until it was sunk within a foot of the floorboards. Had to dig it out with the excavator that time. only stills of those fiascos though, no video. Might do a compilation sometime. MBT

did it occur to your simple mind they probably DON”T HAVE a fucking chain handy?
February 27th, 2010 at 12:06 am
Unfortunately, one of the challenges working in the developing world is that things we consider simple in the west………….like grade 80 chain, oxy-acytelene cutting torches and 1″ drive impact tools are nonexistant in their domestic markets and have to be user imported. Therefore sometimes we must use gasoline for cutting gas instead of acytelene………knotted old cables instead of proper pulling cables and one should never use chain in this application anyway with cable being much safer.

There is a simple thing called a chain…no need to twist your old cable around
